Another Boldly Going Forward?… by Damien

IESB recently sat down with James Kyson Lee and asked him about maybe having a role in Star Trek…

The IESB was able to speak with James Kyson Lee who plays Ando on NBC’s Heroes and Star Trek XI was the hot topic!

Zachary Quinto is Spock, Anton Yelchin has been cast as Pavel Chekov, so who will round up the rest of the cast? Will the rest of the OG crew such as Sulu, Scotty, etc make appearances as well?

A couple of weeks ago during Comic Con, the IESB spent a few minutes talking to a few of the guys from Heroes including Milo Ventimiglia, Zachary Quinto – the recently announced Spock and James Kyson Lee – Ando. And Star Trek was very much the conversation!

As we spoke with James, he said he would love to play the role of Hikaru Sulu that was made legendary by actor George Takei. At first I thought that he was kidding a bit, but by the end of the interview, it appears that he was quite serious about trying to reach out the Abrams camp.

Could he pull it off? Certainly. Would it be too much to have two Heroes stars playing two roles in the new Star Trek movie? Probably, but it still fun to see actors being so excited about Star Trek. Besides, a good actor is a good actor and it’s all about who you know in this business.

You know Greg Grunberg (my favorite Hero) is going to have a part in there somewhere. He’ll probably be the Ensign without a last name…and we all know what that means! Hopefully he will supply some plucky comic relief along the way.

Ando for Season 2… by Damien

Thanks to Spoiler TV for bringing this to my attention…

Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?

A) I just did a cameo on “Las Vegas,” which is a show on NBC. I have four feature films coming out this year and next year. The last one I worked on was called Big Deal with Treat Williams, Daniel Baldwin and Charlotte Ross. It should come to theaters next year. I also filmed a pilot for a show on the E! network. It’s a half hour comedy. If it is a go, it is something I will be doing in the summer. I also have a couple of offers for some feature films. There will be some scheduling conflicts and then there will be some summer projects. Then, I’ll return to film season two of “Heroes.”

Q) Please tell us about your character Ando on the hit show “Heroes.”

A) He is a worker in Japan who is the best friend of Hiro. He began to be a realist and Hiro is like a child living in a fantasy land. As he witnesses some super natural events, he becomes a believer in this journey to save the world. As the story progresses he realizes that he too is a hero, regardless if he has hero powers or not, and that he has a big claim in this mission.

Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?

A) When I read the script, I realized there was something special on hand. I was curious how it would all come together. It was probably the best script I’ve read in a few years. It is a show that I wanted to watch, regardless if I wanted to be in it or not. So far, it’s been a great experience! I love going to work. I love the people I work with, all of the producers, writers and directors, especially the cast and crew. They are wonderful!

Q) What about your role is challenging?

A) Having to learn a new foreign language was definitely a challenge. I took a semester of Japanese in college, but by far this was the most I had to learn and study. It’s been a great joy really learning a new language for the role.

Q) When you started the show, did you think it would be so successful?

A) I really felt like the show had a lot of potential. Not only does it combine the comic book and Science Fiction genre, but at the core of it, it is a human relationship drama. I feel like the show has something that everyone can latch on to. The cast is so diverse in its ethnicity and our backgrounds. I feel like the central theme of the show is people from different backgrounds coming together for a common goal and there is also the notion that maybe you are meant for something greater than what you realize. I think that is a feeling that people can relate to.

Q) What is your most memorable moment from filming?

A) There has been so many! Sometimes on Friday, at lunch, they show the upcoming episode on a projector. They show it on a big screen and we all watch it together! It was so much fun. It is like we are watching a movie together. That is one of my favorite memories. One time, we also filmed in downtown. It was the first time where all twelve of us were on set together. It was Peter’s (Milo Ventimiglia) dream sequence and during that time, we all hung out over burger and beers. That was fun! Every week is a new experience!

Q) If you could have any super power, what would it be?

A) I think being able to fly would be really fun. You’re hanging out with your friends late at night and they ask you if you need a ride. You can say, “No thanks, I am just going to take off!” Then, you literally blast off into space! If I had a choice, I think I’d like to talk to animals and see what they think about things.

Q) Why do viewers continue to tune in to see the show “Heroes?”

A) I think, not only is it fun and exciting with great action and drama, there is intensity and humor. Like I said before, because it is rooted in reality, it has got something that people can relate to. There is a feeling that you want to strive for something more. Also, if you are struggling with your identity, there is the whole notion of going through a divine experience just to become a better person. I think that is something that everyone can relate to and understand.

Hero Emerges… by Damien

James Kyson Lee (at least I got his name right this time!!!) sat down with Wizard and talked about his role on Heroes and at the time of this interview he was filming Episode 22…

Do we end up finding out you have a superpower, too?

LEE: That’s the question of the year. I get asked that so many times, and that’s a great question for the show’s writers. We talk about this all the time. I thought it would be funny if Ando gets a power that’s just unique, but random. Like, he can make cheese out of thin air. It’ll be like, “Mozzarella!” Or he could be like a Karaoke Hawk: When he gets mad he’d turn all blue and start singing ’80s rock songs from Journey with explosions and glass shattering, and everyone would be like, “Stop! We surrender.” I mean, who knows? You never know what’s going to happen with this show.

You seem to be able to get a job as a security guard at the drop of a hat. Maybe that’s your power.

LEE: I know. Hotel bellhop. I could be changing uniforms every two episodes. I don’t know what’s next. Construction worker? It’s so fun always coming in camouflaged like that and it’s always fun what they do with Ando and Hiro. They kind of come in and save each other at the end of the day.

CBR Interviews Ando… by Damien

AndoJames Kyson Lee may not be a household name yet, but as Ando in NBC’s hit TV show “Heroes,” he has instantly gained a huge fan following alongside everyone’s favorite time traveler, Hiro Nakamura. But before “Heroes” exploded on to television screens everywhere, he was finishing up an independent short film called “Akira’s HipHopShop.” “It’s a romantic comedy about a young Japanese guy who owns a record store,” Lee told CBR News. “He gets into a relationship with an African American girl. It’s a coming from two different cultures kind of thing. There is something really unique about it and I loved working with my co star.”

The film is now currently in post production, “He [Joe Doughrity, writer and director of ‘Akira’s HipHopShop’] is finishing up the short version of it. He sent me a rough cut and I really like it. I think he’s already fielding offers to make it a feature, and he wants to make it a feature, and he wants to do it soon. I think he’s shooting it within the next year.”

Just because shooting is currently wrapping up on the end of the first season of “Heroes,” that doesn’t mean Lee will get much time off. “I wrap season one in mid-April. I am going to New York to do a cameo for a film that is filming there right now and then the end of April I go to Orlando for a four day convention. Then in May I am doing a 20 th Century Fox feature called ‘Shutter’ with Joshua Jackson and Rachel Taylor. It’s a supernatural thriller we’ll be filming in Tokyo, Japan. [I am] real excited! It’s going to be my first time in Tokyo. Soon as I finish that, I have an offer for another feature film in San Diego and we’re working on a deal right now for another feature film in September, shooting in Arizona.”
