Can Jack Stop Heroes… by Damien

“Heroes” returns tonight after a long hiatus. Once again I will be torn between saving the cheerleader and watching the indestructible Jack Bauer.

Both “24” and “Heroes” are among my favorites. And they will be battling for viewers in the 9 p.m. Monday time slot as they barrel forward to their finales in May.

Thank the TV gods for online repeats. If I watch “24” on Fox tonight, I can catch “Heroes” later at nbc.com. If I pick “Heroes” on NBC, I can catch “24” later at myspace

.com/fox.

I’ll probably go with “Heroes” because this season of “24” became bogged down with a subplot about a sinister vice president (Powers Boothe) who tried to take over the White House from the wooden and wimpy President Palmer (D.B. Woodside).

The season started off with a nuclear blast that wiped out about 12,000 people and most of Valencia, Calif. Since then, superagent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) has broken all kinds of state and federal laws to stop another bomb from going off.

In a confounding and cockamamie plot, he has battled ruthless terrorists from the Middle East, taken on Russian thugs and diplomats, and fought with CTU agents.

Tonight, he takes on evil Chinese agents who have taken his girlfriend, Audrey Raines (Kim Raver), hostage. We thought she was dead. Now she’s back. Well, anything is possible, or nothing is impossible, on “24.”

The episode takes place between 11 p.m. and midnight. It’s hard to believe that 18 hours ago (in “24” time), Jack arrived in the United States battered and scarred from two years of torture in a Chinese prison.

It has been a hell of a day for Jack. He has been stabbed, kicked and beaten. But he looks remarkably well.

Even though “24” is having a crazy, less-than-stellar season, I still get a kick out of it. Part of the fun is watching just how far credibility can be stretched.

But I get a bigger kick out of the dark, mysterious “Heroes,” which can have wild twists and turns because it’s science fiction.
